GAC launches a unique Tennis Academy

We are pleased to announce the opening of the GAC Tennis Academy, directed by seasoned tennis professional, Scott Hutchinson. Not only will the Academy expand our current tennis program, but GAC will now offer private and group lessons, league play, and the potential for USTA and ALTA teams.

But wait…there’s more! — The GAC Tennis Academy is for students AND adults!

Students will have the ability to take lessons during and after school, and we will incorporate tennis into our Physical Education curriculum in the future. Parents, you can take advantage of one-on-one or a group lesson after morning carpool. Come improve your backhand in a private or group lesson at the L.A.C.E. Tennis Courts or get to know other GAC moms and dads by joining an adult tennis team. Similar to the School of Ballet, Swim Club, and the School of Music, the GAC Tennis Academy makes it possible for your family to experience top-level extra-curricular programs on one campus.

Scott Hutchinson is no stranger to GAC families. Most recently, Scott served for more than 12 years as the tennis professional at TPC Sugarloaf, building and leading one of the most dynamic and highly successful first-class tennis programs. He has served as a personal coach to many GAC students and parents.

Scott is excited to join the GAC family: “I’ve always admired from afar GAC’s forward-thinking focus. The opportunity to be part of the GAC family and the profound impact that this institution has on growing students’ faith is something that fits seamlessly into my family’s core values. I’m excited for the opportunity to develop a program in a manner that has never been done before in the south.” He will also be supporting our Junior High and Senior High tennis team coaches and plans to launch Junior-level ALTA teams right away.

Tennis is a lifelong sport. This is a great opportunity to get your child involved at an early age.

What is your vision for the GAC Tennis Academy?
“My vision for the GAC tennis program is to develop an inclusive culture where our kids, parents, and future GAC families grow together through the sport of tennis. From Young Learners to Senior High, our goal will be to develop champions both on and off the court. Our process will foster lasting relationships, as our families build a bond focusing on a common goal. There’s nothing better than the bond you have when you are part of a team.”

What is your vision for growing our tennis teams?
“My goal for our Junior High, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams is to provide a cohesive working platform that blends smoothly with current and future individual and team needs. Our culture of developing champions both on and off the court is one part of our core values. At the highest level, we will position our varsity team each season so that we are in the running for a state championship. The trickle-up effect will build from our youngest players (3, 4 & 5 year olds) through the ranks of our JH, JV, and Varsity teams. By the time our players get to the varsity level, our goal will be to become state champs.”

What about league teams?
“Our goal for league teams (ALTA, USTA) is based around our main objective of developing a culture of champions. Each of us has different aspirations and certainly different skill sets. However, if we can build together a culture of excellence starting with our Young Learners up to Senior High, we will grow our community in ways never imagined. We will grow our friendships, our bonds, and most importantly our faith as one, as a team. Through league play we will be able to offer opportunities to play matches at every level so that the needs of all individuals are met. Regardless if it’s a league play season or the main school season, we would like for everyone to be on a team throughout the calendar year.”

What about tournaments at GAC?
“We have three USTA-sanctioned one-day tournaments coming to GAC in 2017. They will take place in May, August, and November. Specifics on these events will be communicated closer to the event date.”

What types of lessons will you offer?
“Private, semi-private, and group lessons will be available immediately. Clinics for teams, Drill ‘n’ Play, Stroke of the Day, and cardio will also be available immediately.”

What about parents?
“Ideally, we are looking to build a path towards creating teams. With that said, the earliest that we will potentially have adult team play would be summer 2017. However, we will be putting together on-court opportunities both in lesson format and social opportunities for moms and dads immediately.”

Enjoy these GAC parent quotes about their experience with Scott:

“Scott’s passion for both the sport and the kids he works with is incredible. We appreciate the time and care he took to help our boys learn a game they will enjoy the rest of their lives. They experience they had early on with Scott has stuck with them throughout their athletic careers and we have no doubt that his encouragement played a huge part in their confidence to push their athletic goals. Scott is a phenomenal tennis coach.” — Dawn and Scott Roberts

“Coach Scott has been a positive influence for many children in our community on and off the court. He has coached my son for the last 4 years and has a genuine love and passion for tennis. GAC is fortunate to have him leading and developing our tennis program!” — Melissa and Chau Nguyen

“We are thrilled to hear Scott Hutchinson is joining the GAC family! Scott has been instrumental in developing Molly and Margo’s love of tennis! Scott’s passion for developing athletes in our community will be apparent the minute he starts at GAC!” — Sarah and John Pritchard

“Coach Scott is a special guy. His natural skills involving tennis, player development, and even service to the community are admirable. One unique quality about Coach Scott is that he got to truly know my children and created a fun environment for tennis at the same time! He understood my child’s tennis skills but also took the time and interest to learn about their other sports, their friends, our family, and our interests. He’s that special coach you read about that not only develops your child’s skills but cultivates a positive, mentoring relationship, while having a lot of fun playing tennis!

Coach Scott is particularly good at developing players at different levels. I have one daughter who is a casual tennis player who thrived with an occasional clinic and fun, lively summer camps. He never abandoned her, despite the peaks and valleys of her interest over the 13 years he worked with her. I have another daughter who needed competitive USTA tournaments, weekly clinics and private lessons. He literally sat down with us and developed a formal, written plan to meet her goals, with dates, tasks, required practice commitment, lessons, clinics, tournaments (including quantity per year) and so much more. He can customize a plan for any player and work to their needs and interests. Whether your child’s goals are a D1 Collegiate player or a “vacation-only” player, he’s got the skills to make it work.” — Susan and Rick Lowenstein
